Critical Analysis of The Journey of the Magi Free Essay Example, 1000 words
ââ¬Å"It was (you may say) satisfactoryâ⬠(Eliot, 31) may strike one as a masterpiece of understatement but, nevertheless, it does express content. The image of ââ¬Å"the three trees on the low skyâ⬠(Eliot, 24), is definitely symbolic of the three crosses at the site of Christââ¬â¢s crucifixion on Mount Calvary. While this picture does evoke the sorrow and the pain of Christââ¬â¢s sacrifice, the shadows of darkness are immediately illuminated by the image of the promised dawn conjured up by the ââ¬Å"low sky. â⬠Christââ¬â¢s crucifixion is but the gateway to a limitless horizon of new beginnings. The low sky is the harbinger of many dawns to come. Thus the three trees constitute ââ¬Å"a negative image relating to Christââ¬â¢s death but on the other hand, a positive image relating to Christââ¬â¢s sacrifice for humanityâ⬠(Finley, American Literature Research and Analysis Web site). The ââ¬Å"white horse, â⬠(Eliot, 25) as in St. Johnsâ⠬⢠Book of Revelations, represents death: the death of sin and the death of the old ways (Logue, Sermon on 6 January 2001). Death is vanquished and driven away by the dawn of a new belief. This is an obvious allusion to Judasââ¬â¢ betrayal of Jesus for thirty pieces of silver and also to the soldiers casting lots for Jesusââ¬â¢ clothes at the foot of the cross after the crucifixion. Once again, this picture of waste and emptiness is immediately countered by the preceding hope of fulfillment, represented by the fertile symbolism of the ââ¬Å"vine-leaves over the lintelâ⬠(Eliot, 26), whose promised harvest will fill the empty wine-skins with the new wine of faith in Jesus. The inn with ââ¬Å"an open doorâ⬠(Eliot, 27) represents the mansion of God the Father, into which Jesus has promised entry to all true believers: ââ¬Å"In my Fathersââ¬â¢ House are many mansions: â⬠¦ I go to prepare a place for youâ⬠(John 14:2, King James Bible). S alvation is an open door, always accessible and within the reach of every true seeker of Christ. A warm welcome awaits every traveler at the end of his weary pilgrimage. The poems ultimate declaration of hope resides in the staunch assertion of the Magus in the last paragraph: ââ¬Å"And I would do it again, â⬠he says (Eliot, 33). Just as he acknowledges the rigors of their quest in the beginning, the Magus now concedes that the birth of Christ was ââ¬Å"hard and bitter agony for usâ⬠(Eliot, 39). He is perplexed by the implications of the Divine birth and admits that he is yet to grasp the true significance of this ââ¬Å"Birth â⬠¦ like Deathâ⬠(Eliot, 38 ââ¬â 39).

Management of Hazardous Wastes Free Essays
Everday we hear more bad news about our planet. Reports tell us that wildlife and forests are disappearing at an alarming rate. Newscasts give the latest word on how quickly earth is losing its protective shirld and warming up. We will write a custom essay sample on Management of Hazardous Wastes or any similar topic only for you Order Now Newspapers lament the pollution of our air, water, and soil. What can we do in the face of such widespread gloom? In fact, we do not have to feel helpless. We can each learn practical ways to better our environment. For example, saving and recycling newspapers has a number of positive results. First, recycling newspaper saves trees. The average American consumes about 120 pounds of newsprint a year-enough to use up one tree. That means close to 250 million trees each year are destroyed for paper in this country alone. If we recycled only one-tenth of our newpaper, we would save 25 million trees a year. Second, making new paper from old paper uses up much less energy than making paper from trees. Finally, this process also reduces the air pollution of paper-making by 95 percent. Another earth saving habit is ââ¬Å"precyclingâ⬠waste. This means buying food and other products packaged only in materials that will decay naturally or that can be recycled. The idea is to prevent unrecyclable materials from even entering the home. For instance, 60 of the 190 pounds of plastic-especially styrofoam-each American uses a year are thrown out as soon as packages are opened. Be kind to your planet by buying eggs, fast food, and other products in cardboard instead of styrofoam cartons. Buy beverages in glass or aluminum containers instead of plastic ones. Buy in bulk to reduce the amount of packaging, you will save money too. Finally, when you can, buy products whose packing shows the ââ¬Å"recycledâ⬠logo. Materials that have been recycled once can be recycled again. Wise management of hazardous household wastes is yet another way of taking action for the planet. Hazardous wastes include paint, old car batteries, oven and drain cleaners, mothballs, floor and furniture polish, pesticides, and even toilet bowl cleaners. First of all, we should store hazardous materials properly by keeping them in their original containers, making sure they are clearly labeled, and keeping them in a cool, dry place that is out of the reach of children. Second, we can reduce our use of these products by buying only what we need and by sharing anything that might be left over. Third, we should take great care in disposing of hazardous wastes. Certain wastes such as old car batteries and motor oil can be refined and reused, and in some cities can be turned in for special burning. However, local authorities have to be contacted because disposal practices vary so much from place to place. These personal actions may not seem important. At the very least, though, they can relieve some of the helplessness we all feel when faced with the threats of global disaster. If carried out on a larger scale by millions of individuals, they could greatly improve our environment and lives. How to cite Management of Hazardous Wastes, Essay examples

Human Resource for Megamines International - myassignmenthelp.com
Question: Discuss about theHuman Resource Management for Megamines International. Answer: Introduction Megamines International is a mining company that is facing a tough situation in the market. Due to the changing market conditions, the company is losing its competitive edge in the market and wants to bring about some serious changes in its Kookaburra mines but is facing a lot of internal issues in executing its change strategies. Therefore, this strategy is aimed at gaining a deeper insight into the case of the company and making suggestions to deal with the situation. SWOT Analysis A SWOT analysis is a framework that allows business organisations in analysing the strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats of a business project and understand the feasibility of a project for taking better business decisions (MT Team, n.d.). A SWOT analysis of the companys present situation is given below: Strengths: First of all, the company has a great team of senior managers. The president of the company, Jake Andrews, is a tough no-nonsense guy who is an exceptional leader. He is a democratic leader who takes decisions only after consulting his subordinates (Raza, 2017). Secondly, the company has a talented pool of employees who have a lot of market information. The employees are aware about the conditions that are prevailing in the market and in the company itself. They also have certain solutions in mind that will help the company in dealing with its problems. Weaknesses: First of all, a major weakness of the company is that its Kookaburra subsidiary is under a great influence of the labour unions. Labour unions are playing a dominating role in the subsidiary and making it difficult for the management to operate properly and achieve better profitability, productivity and efficiency. Secondly, the company has a huge redundant workforce working in its Kookaburra subsidiary. The Kookaburra subsidiary currently employs 2,000 employees who are adding up to the operational costs, which is making the company less profitable and efficient. Opportunities: First of all, a great opportunity that lies in front of the company is to implement technological solutions to solve most of its problems. Implementing technological solutions will allow the company to cut down its operational costs, become more profitable and ultimately to outperform its competitors. Secondly, the present situation is an opportunity for the company to deal with redundant workforce using various measures and overcome the negative conditions to become more profitable and productive in the future. Threats: First of all, the mine at Kookaburra is highly dominated by the labour unions and the management of the company has a lower hand in the decision making process. Further, even the political scenario is not in favour of the company as the politicians are more inclined towards the workforces welfare, which makes it impossible for the company to reduce the size of its workforce so that it could survive in the market. Secondly, the market scenario of the business is changing drastically. The prices of the companys core products have hit a 10-year low and the pressure is mounting. China, a major customer of the business, has stopped buying products from the business, which is posing a great threat to the existence of the business. Human Resource Management Problems The mining company is definitely facing a number of human resource management problems, which is having a toll on its competitiveness and profitability. The human resource management problems being faced by the company are discussed below: First of all, the company lacks a system of workforce planning. If the company had a system of workforce planning, it would not be having such a large redundant workforce as it would have allowed the company to forecast the human resource needs and ensure optimum number of employees in the workplace (Vorhauser-Smith, 2015). Secondly, the company is has failed to maintain strong relation with the employees because of which, there are multiple trade unions in the workplace and they have a upper hand in the negotiation process. As a result, the company is failing in implementing any change strategy and reduce the size of the workforce to become more profitable and efficient (O'Brien, 2014). The labour unions are tough and act like militants who can go to any extent to get their demands fulfilled (Lombardo, 2015). Thirdly, the company is also facing an issues related with its compensation and benefit management. The company has a workforce that is more in number than required and paying them high wages is making the company less profitable. Megamines Business Strategy Megamines is facing a tough market situation. The industrial scenario is changing rapidly and is making it tougher for the company to stay profitable. The workforce of the company is more in number than required and high wage rates are making the company less profitable. The strategy that the business management is looking to implement in the workplace is corporate downsizing. Corporate downsizing is a strategy that business organisations often use in adverse economic conditions. Corporate downsizing involves cutting jobs in order to decrease the operational costs in order to remain competitive and profitable. Downsizing can result in a large number of employees being laid off from their jobs (Snyder Welch, 2015). In a downsizing strategy, a human resource manager can implement different strategies to deal with the adverse economic conditions. In some cases, the managers can permanently lay off the employees whereas in some conditions, the managers might rehire the laid off employees after a predefined period of time. Corporate downsizing strategy is one of the toughest organisational decisions as it can create a number of social and legal issues for a company. Laying off the employees is considered to be unethical and against the corporate social responsibility of a firm. As a result, business organisations try to achieve a reduction in their workforce using other methods, such as job sharing, sending the employees on holidays, temporary leaves, etc. rather than laying them off permanently (Doyle, 2016). Recommendations for Solving Human Resource Issues Human resource management issues can have a great deal of impact on a companys work operations, efficiency, productivity and profitability. The condition of Megamines can, to some extent, be attributed to the human resource issues that the company is facing. To become more effective and to deal with the human resource issues, the company can look into the following recommendations: The management of the company needs to address the issue of redundant workforce and high compensations. It is not always beneficial to stick to organisational downsizing as a strategy to deal with adverse economic conditions because it can involve a lot of social and legal controversies. Therefore, the management of the company needs to look out for alternatives that will help them in avoiding permanent layoffs. To address this issues, the management can inform the workforce about the alarming condition of the industry and how every employees job is at a risk, which is creating an urgency to bring about a decrease in the compensations and benefits that the employees are getting. This way, the employees will get a clarity that if they do not except some cuts in their wages, the entire workforce will lose their job because of the company being shut down (Gandolfi, 2008). Once the employees have peacefully excepted a cut in their wages and benefits, the next and an immediate step should be to implement a performance management system in the workplace. A performance management system will help the company in fostering a performance oriented environment in the workplace and increase the competition amongst the employees. On the basis of a performance management system, it would become easier for the management to take actions against those employees who are failing in meeting their performance objectives and slowly and steadily, the company will be able to deal with its redundant workforce. Further, to deal with the redundant workforce, the company can also offer early retirements to certain employees who are about to get retired in the near future and can make its strategy more appealing by offering them a special retirement plan (Sozo Firm, 2017). The company can also freeze all its recruitment and selection programs in the future until it has dealt with its redundant workforce so that the issues do not pile up with new workers joining the mining company regularly. Another way to deal with the redundant workforce can be to transfer some of the employees to different facilities where the operational costs are less and the employees are paid less wages (Thebalance, n.d.). Such strategies will allow the company to avoid laying off its employees permanently and avoid the legal and social issues related with it. The company will also be able to hire these employees back in case the economic conditions start to improve in the future. Thus, such a strategy will help the company in dealing with most of the human resource issues that it is experiencing at the present. Bibliography MT Team, n.d. SWOT Analysis. The President Essays - Heads Of State, Titles,
The President Article II of the US Constitution grants the president numerous powers and responsibilities, but the the authority granted to the modern presidency far exceeds the constitutional definition of office. And through the years, a variety of presidential roles have evolved that were not originally or specifically outlined in the Article. Some of these roles were legislated by congress, the courts granted some, and powerful presidents assumed others. The president's first role is as chief executive, the head of the executive branch and most of its workers. He is responsible for the ethics, loyalty, efficiency, and responsiveness of the federal government and its employees. The evolution of the chief executive's primary role provides a useful example of how the presidential power has developed through the years. At the outset, the Constitution granted the chief executive the power to appoint all officials in the executive branch, but after George Washington's term. Custom gave the chief executive power to remove appointees. Finally, legislation granted him the power to reorganize agencies and to prepare the budgets. In the role of chief of state, the president acts as a ceremonial head of the federal government. This is an extremely important role, for in this capacity, the president must greet distinguished visitors, bestow medals, and host state dinners. The impression he gives others while performing these duties can help him gain support, lift his reputation, and help towards reelection. President William Howard Taft once said the president must act as ?the personal embodiment and representative of the dignity and majesty? of the people, the government, and the laws of the United States. The president also serves as commander in chief of the nation's armed forces, which makes him ultimately responsible for the nation's defense. He appoints and removes generals, makes key military decisions (such as when and where to wage war), and negotiates armistice terms. During wartime emergencies, the president is also entitled to restrict civil liberties, to exert greater control over the economy, to seize industries, to fix wages and prices, and to settle labor disputes. Finally the commander in chief alone decides when and if the nation will use its atomic weapons. This role is extremely important because in acting out his decisions, the president is deciding the future of the nation, and we the people are putting extreme powers in the hands of one man. Though he is influenced by his associates and generals about the proper actions in times of political crisis, the last decision is up to the president. People who are not supporters of the president or his decisions te! nd to panic in times of war, and thus it is extremely important that the president makes the impression to the nation as a competent and capable man who one can have faith in. Another extremely important role that the president takes on is that of the nation's chief diplomat. Although the Constitution attempted to divide diplomatic affairs between the president and congress, these affairs have become primarily a presidential responsibility. He negotiates treaties and executive agreements, manages foreign alliances, recognizes new governments, appoints and supervises diplomatic personnel, and receives foreign ambassadors. The Constitution accords the president the power to veto congressional bills and recommend legislation to congress. This means that if the president disapproves of a bill (this usually happens when a bill contradicts the president's political group or personal beliefs), he can respond with a ?message veto' and return the bill to Congress with a message stating the reasons he has for not signing it. This helps Congress ?edit? the bill in such a way that the president will pass it, though many times it looks completely different than the original bill that they began with. If Congress is about to adjourn, the president can also respond with a ?pocket veto' and refuse to sign the bill within ten days. If Congress adjourns within that time, the bill will not become law. In modern times, the president also has a responsibility to the legislature: he must annually address Congress on the state of the Union. The roles of chief executive, chief of state, commander in chief, chief diplomat, and a key legislator originated in the Constitution. But over

The Word ââ¬Â Civilization ââ¬Â Essay Example
The Word â⬠Civilization â⬠Essay Example The Word â⬠Civilization â⬠Essay The Word â⬠Civilization â⬠Essay Name: Course: Lecturer: Date: The Word ââ¬Å"Civilizationâ⬠Introduction The Oxford Dictionary of Word defines civilization as the ââ¬Å"stage of human social development and organization, which is considered most advanced. It is the development of human cultures, which become complicated daily. The development of science and technology affects civilization. The concept of civilization is central to the historical theories identified by Arnold J. Toynbee. Toynbee described history as the process of the rise and decline of civilizations. Civilization is also central to the political beliefs of Samuel P. Huntington who argues that the defining characteristic of the 21st century will be the interaction and conflict between civilizations (Lord Kenneth Clark). Civilization has many positive and negative impacts on culture. Discussion The civilization movement has been there for many centuries. Lord Kenneth Clark notes that, ââ¬Å"From a native European Christian ethnocentric viewpoint, human history is the history of progress.â⬠This view contributed to the development of civilization as represented by the European Christian culture. This was associated with the European colonialism, and with the relation of Europeans and Americans with the indigenous people such as the Native Americans. Unlike before, where progress was seen from a Christian perspective, other viewpoints hold that ââ¬Å"there are and there have been many advanced civilizations in human history and that no one culture is inherently superior.â⬠The role of civilization on culture has been an integral part of colonialism. The Europeans were the major colonizers in human history and wherever they went, their main agenda was to introduce Christianity as one of the ways of introducing civilization, they considered their culture superior an d they sought ways of introducing it to the people they colonized. Civilization has however not been confined in the early European viewpoint. According to C. H. Hacksins, ââ¬Å"The one who contemplates the reason modern science and technology have taken giant steps and advanced to the present state would certainly agree that it is due to Islamic civilization, which transmitted and introduced vast amounts of knowledge and produced many scholars.â⬠The advancement of the Islamic faith was instrumental to bringing civilization and defining the progress of humanity. Positive Effects realized through Civilization One of the most important benefits of civilization has been technology. Technology has been introduced in all aspects of human life and it has changed the way things used to be done. The internet is one of the major achievements of technology. This was made possible by the advancement of computer technology. The internet was first used by a few individuals when it was first introduced. Nowadays almost everybody in the world has access to the internet. It is practically impossible to imagine life without the internet. As Bill Gates noted, ââ¬Å"Today, the internet is far from obscure-it is the center of attention for business, governments and individuals around the world. It has spawned entirely new industries, transformed existing ones, and become a global cultural phenomenon. but, despite its impact, todayââ¬â¢s internet is still roughly where the automobile was during the era of Henry Fordââ¬â¢s Model T. we have seen a lot of amazing things so far, but there is much more to come. We are only at the dawn of the internet age. No industry can survive without the internet today. It has greatly contributed to civilization because it has caused progress. People have however fully utilized its use and for progress to be fully achieved, the internet has to be utilized fully. Negative Effects Realized through Civilization Despite the many and obvious benefits of civilization, there are still those who assert that it has caused negative effect on peopleââ¬â¢s lives. Most of the arguments are based on the bad effects of civilization on technology. Other negative effects of civilization have been noted on a health basis where opponents argue that civilization had a role in the increased number of bacteria and germs. Junji Takano questions the role played by civilization in the health sector. He alleges that, ââ¬Å"It is true that civilization creates bacteria and viruses. It means that more diseases are surfacing to the world. Civilization created thousands of modern sufferings as you can see in medical books of the world. What did civilization do to us? Who did it? Is it not scientists of today? Are they facing to right direction? Are they not leading us to wrong world?â⬠Although many diseases were eradicated, the human race has been faced with more diseases such as Alzheimerââ¬â¢s, which w ere not known previously. Takano also notes that civilization has also had an affect on the quality of food. ââ¬Å"Pork, beef, chicken, and even fish are cultured artificially in a cage. Fruits you eat are no longer the taste we knew several decades ago. Vegetables at supermarkets we buy are all house cultured without soil. It is very difficult to find meats and vegetables grown in the wild. Food itself has no power of immunity from bacteria and other foreign diseases.â⬠The use of chemical herbicides, fertilizers and pesticides affect the quality of food and makes them unhealthy and non-beneficial for human consumption. Foods grown in natural habitats add more benefit to humans because they are full of nutrients. Conclusion Civilization has, and continues to play a big role in human life. It is not limited to one culture and no culture can be seen as more civilized since civilization entails many things. It has had both negative and positive effects. The positive benefits of science and technology have especially been instrumental in improving living standards and conditions of people. Civilization has contributed negatively especially in the health sector. Despite all this, the positive effects realized through civilization outweigh the negative.

Communication Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 250 words - 1
Communication - Essay Example (Holt) In this modern world where facebook has become famous it can be used as a communication tool keep in touch with the other organizations, departments and other locations. Another important tool of communication is E-mail. The success of the communication also depends on the type of technology being used. For instance if a company comprises of people who are expert in operating computer blogs, wikis and other methods of communication are the best tools to keep the organization well informed. So if the message is not properly communicated the communication will be lost. So before drafting any communication all the elements of communications must be checked. If an organization has to appoint new employees for vacant positions it is better that the organization hire from within their own organization by promoting the employees to a higher position as this will save the labor turnover cost on the other hand it will increase the morale of the employees of the company and they will wo rk more hard to improve their performance from before.. But if employees are to be hired from outside then the interview should be planned. It means that the interviewer should read each applicants resume prior to the interview. His focus should be on the core information desired.
